Redditch Library project progressing well.

Work to revamp Redditch Library in Worcesterhsire is progressing well.

The refurbishment project was previously planned to be completed in Spring 2010 but following a review of the phasing of building works this has now been brought forward, with the new projected completion being late January/ early February 2010.

The refurbishment of the library is now underway with work starting on the ground floor. The library was closed to the public in order to condense and re-organise services onto the two upper floors so that building works on the ground floor could commence, but is it now open to the public. There will be other short closure periods during the porject.

Once the refurbishment is complete new features will include a new Quick Pick section, an exhibition, meeting and gallery area, a glass lift connecting all public floors, four new public toilets, a new area for teenagers, a redesigned children’s library and a relax and read area.

The new library has been designed by the county council's in-house property services team, with the main contractor for the refurbishment works being Speller Metcalfe Ltd from Malvern. The work involves the expansion and refreshing of the public spaces within the current building, resulting in a brighter, more attractive public library.

Progress of the refurbishment can be followed online by visiting the Redditch Library photo album on Flickr.

While all the stock is in place in the new building, many other facilities will only become available gradually during August.

At a cost of £39 million the new library is a model of sustainable design, expected to meet the stringent standards of the UK's Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). Energy efficiency features include:

  • Structural factors.
  • Ventilation - A natural ventilation system is used throughout much of the building.
  • Water use - A rainwater recycling system for greywater conserves conservation.

Facilities include exhibition space, a cafe and a language lab.

Preparation work on Cambridge Central Library begins

Work has started on fitting out and preparing the Central Library in Cambridge for its re-opening.

Staff and stock which were transferred to branch libraries around Cambridge during the rebuilding and refurbishment of the library have now started to move back to the Central Library to prepare the new facilities for re-opening to the public.

The Library was originally scheduled to reopen in May last year, but serious structural problems with the original building and unsatisfactory performance by the original building contractor, delayed the project. Click here for more information on the delays.

The old Central Library building has been totally transformed. The inside of the building has been completed gutted, some internal areas were demolished and others rebuilt. A link to the neighbouring Grand Arcade has been created, old storage and office space has been removed and new floor space created by filling in a void between the first and second floors.

The old entrance has been removed and a new, more visible entrance linking the building to the Grand Arcade’s first floor shops has been added. Lifts have been replaced and escalators installed linking all floors. Self Service facilites have also been installed.

The County Council expects to take possession of the building in late June and begin fitting out work at the beginning of July. The Central Library is now set to reopen in late September.

Roof refurbishments continue at Barrow

Work on the roof at Barrow library in Cumbria is expected to continue for several months.

The Grade II listed library building (click here for a photo) is one of the most recognisable buildings in Barrow, but a survey found it to be in need of a new roof.

The first phase of work on the roof, repairing the west-wing roof was completed in 2008 at a cost of £105,000. Now the second phase, repairing the east wing is about to start at a cost of £235,000.

The library will remain open during the work, although there will be some disruption to services at times.

The building evokes much civic pride in the town and it is hoped that these repairs will keep the library building in good order for many years to come.

Some of the internal walls and the chimneys have been removed from the existing building and the opening between the old and the new has been made. The majority of the bricks removed will be reused.
