New Contractor for Cambridge Central Library
Cambridgeshire County Council Chiefs have fallen out with the contractor responsible for building the new Cambridge Central Library and have called in local building firm Coulson to finish the job.
The old Central Library in the Lion Yard complex was closed down in January 2007 as part of the giant Grand Arcade shops scheme. The plan was to rebuild the library and have the new facilities open to the public in early 2008, but the £7.5 million building project has been dogged by problems.
The building work was due to finish in March 2008, but following discussion with previous construction company, a revised opening day in autumn 2008 was agreed. That date was further revised due to structural defects discovered in the fabric of the building. However when this agreed programme wasn't adhered to, the Council terminated the contract and appointed a new contractor to complete the project.
The library is now expected to be completed in September 2009.
The refurbished building will provide
· New and improved stock
· Enhanced IT and learning facilities
· Large, bright children’s area, and attractive teenage area
· Comfortable seating and quiet study spaces with a fresher, well lit environment
· Space for talks, exhibitions and events
· Toilet and baby-change facilities
