Community Libraries within Schools in Aberdeen
The opening of the Bucksburn Academy in Aberdeen today (wednesday 28th October 2009) marks a milestone in the £120m 3Rs project.
Bucksburn Academy is a new secondary school built as an extended community campus facility that also incorporates a community library. The community library replaces the former Bucksburn Library.
The school has accommodation for up to 650 pupils plus facilities for up to 80 youngsters with additional support needs.
The building makes use of the following sustainability features:
- Natural light
- Natural ventilation
- Rain water harvesting
- Scandinavian standards of insulation
- Lighting management system linked to ambient levels of daylight
- Energy generation
- Airtight buildings
- Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS)
The 3Rs Project is the first step in the regeneration of Aberdeen City Council’s schools estate. The 3Rs Project is being implemented through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) using a Non-Profit Distributing Organisation, with support from the Scottish Government.
All schools will be seen as community schools, and community facilities and other Council and public services will be delivered from the buildings.
Another project in the 3Rs scheme that include the provision of a community library is Kaimhill Primary School, which will be replaced by a new nursery school for up to 198 pupils, community facility and library.
